A Fun Surprise Filled with Memories

A couple Mondays ago we went to our Family Home Evening group at the fire hall, which consists of mostly 2nd ward families so it's fun to be with them since we don't see them as often as our own ward. The Thatch's first invited us to come a few years ago and the rest of the crowd has put up with us pretty well. The Pitts usually call to remind us about it, so I think at least they like us to come. This particular time they were very anxious for us to be there and once we arrived, Brother Pitt escorted Cameron quickly away into a back room. We wondered what they were up to, but figured it probably had something to do with scouts.

After we ate dinner, Brother Pitt announced that Cameron had a message to share with us from an old Friend magazine that the library was getting ready to throw away. Apparently Sister Carter works in the library and was throwing out all the old Friends, but she wanted to look through them first and she came across this article. She showed it to Sister Pitt, who showed it to Orley, who decided it would be the perfect lesson for FHE.

As soon as Cameron started reading, James and I instantly recognized the story...

James wrote this story when he was at BYU and sent it into the Friend and it was published. I have a few copies tucked away for the kids, and Tanny let me keep this copy also. It was fun after Cameron finished reading the story and then explained that it was written by his dad about his great grandmother. Then the audience oohed and awed and clapped. Pretty exciting to have a famous author in the family!
