When I first met one of the public defenders, the first thing he said to me was, "I work for evil." Working for evil is a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. And I guess now that "Somebody" is James. After 3 1/2 years in the Prosecutor's Office (cue "Law & Order" theme music), fighting crime and putting bad guys in jail, James has now turned to the Dark Side and will be helping the bad guys escape from jail.Or perhaps I should state this in a more positive way -- James will be just like Matlock... fighting for justice for the wrongfully accused, discovering the missing link that will allow the captive innocent to go free, promoting mercy and fighting for those who are not strong enough to fight for themselves! Yes, James will be a true hero in the eyes of all those who seek honest and dedicated representation in a court of law.
A couple months ago James was offered a full-time position with the Public Defender's office. He turned it down because it wouldn't have been any different than what he was already doing -- he still wouldn't have been able to do outside work or start his own law practice. Last week one of the public defenders quit his job after 30 years of faithful service. The magic of the timing in this situation is that this man's job happens to be a 3/4th time position. They called James the next morning & offered him the job. James accepted. Not only will we have a steady salary with this 3/4th time position, we will also have full benefits. And James will finally be able to start his own practice on the side and start building up clientele. It is an incredible blessing and the timing is truly remarkable. James is very, very excited about it and that makes me happy. While he was working for the "Good Guys" before and truly enjoyed his job, this experience will give him a new point of view and make his resume more diversified. Additionally, James is always telling me that the legal system would never work if there weren't people dedicated to representing defendants to the best of their ability. Who knows? Maybe some of them really are innocent!
So never fear, all you Law Breakers! You don't know the power of the Dark Side! Darth Vader is prepared to assist you in any way possible. May the Force Be with You!

Darth Vader will forever remind me of my dad. He kept my mom laughing when she was in labor with me, reminding her to breathe like Darth. :)
How lucky for both of you. That is so great that James can now do what he really wants to do. There is nothing better then that. Fun adventures await!
