Ammon & Kija Days 2008

We were going to do the "sleep & swim special" at Seven Peaks in Provo, but that will have to wait until next year. Instead we decided to get part of our money's worth for the $181 we spend yearly on boat insurance. James takes the youth boating a lot, but I don't think our family went even once last year. So on the 3rd of July we went boating at Morton Lake. The water was just the right temperature and the kids had a great time playing in it. They had fun skiing, tubing, and knee boarding. They also had fun driving the boat. We stayed until we could hear thunder rumbling, then we headed home to get ready for the Bills' fireworks show. The boys helped with the flag ceremony (all of troop 83's cubs did it, plus Cameron & Micah) before the show started. We weren't planning to sit on the hill but we weren't able to find a good parking spot, so we sat there unprepared. I already wrote about the events with Rebecca running off!

The next morning we went to watch the 4th of July parade. Micah and Jamey packed water balloons to throw at all the people who were squirting water from the floats. It was hot, but everybody had fun. Then when we got home we played in the sprinklers a little bit and then James built "Whiting Water Park" in our back yard with our little pools, our swing set, some boards, lots of rope, and hoses. The kids (and James) had fun playing in that for the afternoon until we got ready for our campout at Rock Creek. We arrived at Rock Creek around 5 p.m. and James, Cameron, and Micah headed off on a 4 mile backpacking trip for one of their merit badge requirements. Cameron did all the cooking for the trip and has now completed his cooking merit badge. The kids and I stayed in camp and explored a little. It was the perfect time to go to Rock Creek because there were no youth groups or tourists there -- it was only us and the 2 sets of missionaries that live there. It was very nice to have the place to ourselves. We had a spiritual campfire program, talking about the pioneers and singing pioneer songs. I didn't sleep much, but I never do on camping trips so it was no surprise, and it was pretty cold. But I think everybody still had a great time. The next morning we stayed for a little while and then headed home. The kids played some more in the Whiting Water Park and James did some straightening of the garage and much-needed house projects. Then to finish off Ammon & Kija days, we all went to TCBY to get a 99 cent cup of yogurt. The kids had never been there before so it was pretty exciting for them. We went to the cemetery to sit by the graves and eat our ice cream. We decided that it was a very fun Ammon & Kija Days, and that they would have had a great time if they' d been here.
