The Eagle Project Continued

Once again our faithful scouts spent a Saturday helping Cameron with his Eagle project. First they picked up the siding for the outside of the shed. Then, when we arrived at the building site there was a giant tractor there moving the shed out of Jerod's big shed-in-progress out onto the dirt, because once they put the roof on they wouldn't have been able to get the shed outside. That was highly entertaining for all the kids.

I'm really glad they didn't break the shed while moving it. Brother Bird said that he'd been tempted to move it by himself the day before. It's a good thing he didn't because all the adult men had to help hold the shed in place while the tractor moved it.

The kids just enjoyed the entertainment. That's Colby holding Lizzie up so she doesn't fall off the beam.

Then the real work began. They finished sheeting the outside of the shed and then wrapped it in house wrap. Then they put the siding up. The siding was too heavy for the boys to hold in place so it ended up being mostly James and Brother Crowley that put the siding up (the boys carried the siding to them). Cameron was a little frustrated at one point, saying that he felt like he was no longer the leader since some of it he couldn't do (or didn't know how to do). I explained to him that being a leader is quite oftentimes making the necessary plans, coordinating efforts, and finding the experts who know how to do a good job who can help you complete the project. I'm sure no one expects a Boy Scout to know how to build a shed from scratch by himself-- the thing that makes it an Eagle project is the fact that he asked the right people to help, especially Brother Gould the building expert, and he coordinated the manpower to get the project done (not to mention all of the preparation work like ordering the supplies and asking for donations, and he's done a very good job of that).

Plus, the boys did get to do plenty of work. They were bummed that they didn't get to shingle the roof yet. I hoped they would get to that, but Brother Gould had to leave again and since we spent a lot of the morning hours (when they would have been more productive) watching them move the shed, we lost some time that we could have used to put the roof on. I guess there will have to be one more building day for the scouts...

The boys all enjoyed using the staple guns to attach the house wrap to the shed. Jerod's little kids came to watch for a while and his little 2 year old has fun with the staple gun too (luckily he's not strong enough to actually staple anything with it).

Another good day of hard work -- and what progress they have made!

Thank goodness for willing leaders! Brother Gould isn't in this picture because he had to leave before this, but James, Brother Smith, and Brother Crowley were still there. They're so good to give up a Saturday for an Eagle project.

Pretty soon the shed will be ready to move to its site on the Soccer Complex at the high school!
